According to the American Heart Association, performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on a person suffering from a heart attack can significantly improve that person’s chances of survival. Although advanced CPR techniques require special training, the AHA developed an effective, easy-to-remember and easy-to-perform protocol for hands-only CPR that only involves two steps:
1) Immediately call 9-1-1.
2) Push hard and fast on the victim’s chest (the AHA recommends pushing to the beat of disco classic Stayin’ Alive).
Whether it’s on the street, at home, or at a public event, if you see a teen or adult collapse, don’t standby and hope for the best. Call 9-1-1 and begin perform hands-only CPR until an ambulance or medical personnel arrive. To learn more about hands-only CPR, please visit the AHA’s Two Steps to Stayin’ Alive page.
